Three years ago, Ian Joughin found himself bobbing up and down in a dinghy on a glacial lake in Greenland to learn more about the subglacial plumbing of the ice sheet. About 10 days later, the lake drained away into a crack with a force greater than Niagara Falls - in about 90 minutes.</description>

<title>Field Safety Training Course for NSF-funded Arctic Researchers</title>
<link>http://www.polar.ch2m.com/</link>
<description>CH2M HILL Polar Services (CPS) is offering a field safety training
course to National Science Foundation (NSF) -funded arctic researchers.
The course will take place in Colorado, 30 March - 2 April 2010, and
will be facilitated by Learn to Return (LTR) Training Systems
(http://www.survivaltraining.com). The course will cover wilderness
medicine training, helicopter and bear safety training, and field skills
specific to working in arctic areas.&#x3C;br/&#x3E;&#x3C;br/&#x3E;

This course is open to 20 NSF-funded arctic researchers. This includes
principal investigators, graduate students, research assistants, and
undergraduate field assistants. The course is free of charge for all
qualified researchers. Travel assistance and per diem is available for
participants outside the local area of the course. CPS can only accept
attendees whose schedules allow them to attend all days of the course.
CPS will provide travel and accommodations for course participants only,
and will not arrange accommodations for partners and/or families or
provide assistance with personal travel in conjunction with the course.&#x3C;br/&#x3E;&#x3C;br/&#x3E;

Interested principal investigators should contact Angela Pagenkopp at:

<title>Ice Drilling/Coring Support for NSF Antarctic Research Solicitation</title>
<link>http://icedrill.org/news/index.shtml</link>
<description>News from the Ice Drilling Program Office:&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;

The NSF Antarctic Research (Solicitation 10-543) proposal deadline is May 25, 2010.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;

As a reminder, if your proposal requires any kind of ice drilling or ice coring support from the IDPO/Ice Drilling Design and Operations (IDDO) you need to download the Field Project Requirement Form (www.icedrill.org/scientists/scientists.shtml) and submit it to IDPO/IDDO via icedrill@dartmouth.edu no later than April 13, 2010.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;

Once the IDPO/IDDO receives your Field Project Requirement Form we will provide you with a cost estimate and a letter of support that MUST be included with your NSF proposal. You should also notify your relevant NSF Program Manager that your proposal requires support from the IDPO/IDDO.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;

<title>Draft Long Range Science Plan: Request for Input</title>
<link>http://icedrill.org/index.shtml#scienceplan</link>
<description>We want to bring your attention to the updated Draft Long Range
Science Plan for ice coring and drilling produced by IDPO and the
Science Advisory Board (SAB). We are making this Draft available on
our web site (see link below) to solicit community input on the Long
Range Science Plan for the ice coring and drilling community. This
document is meant to be the forward planning path for our sciences.
We encourage everyone to review the document and send comments,
questions, additions, etc to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;mailto:IceDrill@Dartmouth.edu&#x22;&#x3E;icedrill@dartmouth.edu&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. This is your
chance to have your say about the future of ice drilling science. On
June 1, 2010 we will incorporate the information we receive and
produce the final 2010 Long Range Science Plan. This plan will be
revisited and revised as appropriate each spring. We thank you in
advance for your input.
