Abstract |
An open circuit hot water drill using a propane water heater and a gasoline-driven pump is described. The drill is designed to reach depths of 300 m in cold ice for holes with a minimum diameter of 3 cm. A maximum drilling rate of 120 m/h was obtained during field tests, and a 220 m holes was drilled in 4 h. |
